Most people when visiting Yosemite don’t leave the valley, but in staying there they miss where Yosemite really shines: the high country. Perhaps one of the lesser-known gems in this area is Mount Hoffman, a mountain practically smack dab in the middle of the park that showcases some of the best mountain and lake views in Yosemite.

The Mount Hoffman trail starts at the May Lake trailhead off of Tioga Road. The trail steadily gains elevation through the forest with peaks onto the surrounding granite cliffs until it reaches May Lake which is a beautiful destination in and of itself.

A few more minutes of climbing from the shore through a small boulder field gives you an incredible view over May Lake.

From here the views are pretty much nonstop as the somewhat sandy trail winds its way through grassy meadows that almost feel out of place contrasted against the grey-white rock. This section of the trail to Mount Hoffman is not marked, however it is fairly well worn and the mountain peak is always in sight so it would be difficult to actually get lost.

After climbing the grassy slope, you’ll reach another boulder/talus field. This is where it becomes a “choose-your-own-adventure” hike as you pick your way up through it to get to the summit. This section requires some light scrambling but it isn’t too strenuous or sketchy.

Apparently if you go to the big rocks on the left you can look down on May Lake which I didn't think to do - next time!

The 10,850’ summit of Mount Hoffman is absolutely spectacular, with unparalleled 360-degree views of the high country, even looking down on Half Dome and Clouds Rest. There are sharp drop offs so take care around the edges. You’ll definitely be wondering if you’re breathless due to the altitude, the drop offs, or the views!

Walking down from the summit is even more incredible as now you get to face the incredible views the entire time, instead of constantly having to turn around to marvel at them. Take your time coming down the grassy slope and take it all in.

After your hike, head down the road to Tenaya Lake to relax on the beach and soak your feet in the chilly water!
